now owns five of the top nine R-rated debuts. It would only end up “a god among gods” in May, July and November. It would be the third-biggest in June, the fourth-biggest in March, and the biggest non- Star Wars debut ever in December.
In terms of the whole “a blockbuster can open anywhere” conversation, It would have the biggest opening ever in January, September and October, as well as the second-biggest debut for February, April and August. It has Warner Bros.’ biggest debut ever for a film that doesn’t involve Batman, Superman or Harry Potter. It had the third-largest opening ever for a non-sequel and “new to cinema” franchise, behind The Hunger Games ($152 million) and (arguably) Suicide Squad ($133m). Yes, “Inflation!,” but give it a few days. Although it was close enough that you could arguably blame Hurricane Irma for the spread. It had the biggest single-day gross for an R-rated movie, even if it had to settle for the second-biggest R-rated Fri-Sun debut of all time behind Deadpool ($132m). It had the biggest opening for an R-rated horror movie, and even adjusted for inflation it had the biggest debut for any kind of “scary” movie save for The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic World. It had the biggest opening for September or October, even adjusted for inflation. It has broken an unholy amount of records right off the bat. With a $50.2m Friday and a $44.9m Saturday, that’s a scorching (for a horror film with numbers like this) 2.45x weekend multiplier, essentially the same as The Conjuring over its then-record breaking $41m debut. The well-reviewed and much buzzed-about film has earned a jaw-dropping $123.1 million in its first Friday-Sunday frame.
